9 years!!!! WOW!!!!

I attended the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale for Graphic Arts and had to take the required photography class, back in 1998, and fell in love with photography.  I took everyone's picture that I could. Friends, family, friends of friends.   I took that time to get to know the camera and I officially opened my business on June 15, 2004....so to celebrate I am gifting a FULL Session with a box of 20 4x6 prints!

How can you enter?
  • answer my weekly poll about portraits session on my facebook page www.facebook.com/OJWSTUDIOS
  • Share the poll on your facebook page
  • come back to my blog and comment that you have answered and shared the poll after each weekly poll!

Each time you answer one and post on here is an chance to win!  You don't need to answer every question to win, but it helps get you another chance!  Questions will be posted every Saturday until July 27th!
This starts today (June 15th) and ends at 10pm on July 27th!  I will then have random.org pick a number and if your post is on that number you will win!!!!!  The Free Full session must be used before August 30, 2013.

A little story about why I picked July for my 700 likes contest.......

A little back story why I am picking July to reach 700 likes and have FREE Facebook only photo sessions IF I reach 700 likes on my page by 7/7.

July 25th would have been my Dad's Birthday.  He passed away in January 2006.  After he passed away it was hard to enjoy the day.  My Mom and I would take the kids to fun places on his birthday, after moving from Florida to here I haven't done anything on his birthday.  It is a difficult day for me and I want to fill it with fun.  What better way to fill my day than with photo sessions!

Way back in 2002 I meet my father-in-law for the first time.  He always had a smile on his face.  The last few years of his life he was battling cancer.  Sadly he lost that fight on my birthday last year, July 18th.  I know this year being only one year after his passing I will need a good distraction.  What better way than photography!

I want to honor these two men who supported my photography back when it was just starting out.    I know they are proud of me and how far I have come with my business but I just want to keep making them proud.

Changes.........

My photography journey officaly started in 1998, but I have had a camera in my hand a lot longer than that.   Wanting to capture my sons every moment in life is what started my journey.

I have always had a part time job while doing my photography business.  Sometimes it got in the way of my business, other times it has helped.   Right now I work 30-35 hours a week at my part time job.  This does get in the way of my business,   I can't answer my phone, return emails or book last minute sessions.

I have decided that I needed to make changes to help my business.  So I made a goal for 2014, a big one!   My goal is to work only with my photography.  No more part time jobs!    To reach this goal I had to make a few changes in the way I run my business.  First thing is my price.   I never raised my prices, they have been the same since 2000!  A lot has changed since 2000! The cost of living has gone up, I have updated my equipment three times and more!

Since I made my goal of being full time photographer I have kept better records of my time with each session.   From the start of a full session, editing the photos, making the gallery, emailing back and forth with the client and ordering the prints.  I found out I wasn't even making minimum wage!    Most people think a photographer has an easy job, but it isn't as easy as it seems.   From the time I start your photo session until I order your prints I log in from 15-20 hours with you depending on what type of session and how much editing needs to be done.    Can you imagine working 15 hours and after deducting cost of running a business and the cost of the prints only masking  $45!   I couldn't believe it!

I am not writing this to justify my price changes.  I writing this to remind everyone that what we do as photographers is more than just clicking a button on a camera.

Over the next 6 months there will be many changes in my business.   I hope you stay with me during these changes.

   Thank you!
Olivia Jean Williams
